Grim reaper skull with scythe on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A hooded grim reaper skull with closed, lashed eyes and a grinning jaw, wearing a wreath of small flowers, holds a scythe whose curved blade arcs behind the figure. The linework is heavy and solid, with black fills in the scythe and the outer hood, while the inner cloth folds are shaded with stippled grey. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centrally on a pale, lightly freckled upper arm against a dark background.

The booth at Scarrow Bridge had a kettle that only boiled if you struck it flat-handed, and by three in the morning the lorries had stopped coming, so I had the long dark to myself and a stamp pad that had been dry since spring.

She came up the middle of the empty lane on foot, hood up, a wreath of white daisies gone brown at the edges around her brow. The scythe rested on her shoulder like a rake. Her eyes were shut, lashes long and combed, as though she had walked a long way and meant to keep walking with them closed. I slid the window open. "Passport," I said, because that was what I had always said. "I don't carry one," she said. "I carry a list." She did not unfold it. She didn't need to. I heard her say my name, my whole name, the one my mother used when I was in trouble.
I told her the ledger was for travellers, not for lists. She agreed, mildly, and asked whether I had ever stamped anything I could not undo. I thought about the lorries, the kettle, the drivers who asked after their wives. Then I found the pad had come alive under my thumb, damp and red, and the stamp in my hand was already pressing itself onto the open page of my own passport, which I did not remember taking out of my coat.
Through the glass I watched her walk on towards the barrier, which lifted for her without a sound. The daisies were white again. Behind her the lane lit up grey and ordinary, and the kettle in the corner began, very quietly, to boil.
