Woman's face under an ornate mask
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A realistic portrait of a woman's face, with one eye and the lips visible beneath an intricate copper-toned mask or headpiece. Fine chains hang from the mask, and the shading gives the skin and metal a soft, three-dimensional look. Warm browns and golds dominate, with touches of red and a small blue-grey highlight in the eye, set against a dark background.

The chain came apart in Oswin's hands before he had finished reading the note pinned to it. Forty links of fine copper, each one stamped with a tiny crown, and the last link was new and bright as a coin. Outside the arrow slits of Harrowgate Keep the rain had settled into a steady grey that made the moat look solid.

The mask had come up the valley road in a cart packed with straw, sent by a widow in Kendal who wanted it mended before the Michaelmas revels. Oswin had never seen a copper so warm. He worked the dented filigree back into its scrolls under the bench lamp while old Maud Thackery, the castle's last steward, sat by the fire counting candles and telling him a story he already half knew.
Her story was that the mask had belonged to a player who wore it up the tower stair one winter night and was never seen to take it off again. Only the chains were left, hanging from the battlements, rattling when the wind came off the fells. Oswin laughed and said a mask could not walk anywhere. Yet when he fitted the last link he found the catch had been filed from the inside, as if someone had wanted it to open easily.
He did not tell Maud. At dawn he wrapped the mask in linen and carried it out to the widow's cart, and the rain had stopped. The first sun touched the gold of the lips and the single green eye, and for a moment the metal seemed to look past him at the empty tower. He left the chain coiled on the bench, its last link still warm from his thumb.
