Woman's portrait with purple roses on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A stylised woman's face with heavy dark eye makeup and black lips sits at the centre, framed by two purple roses, dark leaves, pearl strands and curling hair. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with solid black areas in the hair and a grey, sketched cat or fox figure at the lower edge. Purple and skin tones stand out against the black, and the design fills the outer thigh.

Dear Ada,

You will laugh, but the cat has got the pearls back. Mrs Pryce swears she left them on the dresser the night of the wake, and by Sunday they lay in a neat heap under the hedge at the end of Coldharbour Lane, as if someone had counted them out. Mr Oakes says it's a fox with a taste for trinkets. I say it's the grey tom who sleeps in the wood store, because he sits on the gatepost each evening wearing the look of a creature insulted by the whole parish.
I went up to the forest edge yesterday to find Granny's sister's fan, the one with the painted lady and the two roses. The old path is grown over, but the bracken parts if you know which stone to step on. In a clearing there's a beech stump, and on it, weighted with a flint, the fan lay open as though someone had only just put it down. The lady's hair is black as a rook's wing and her mouth is black too, and at her feet a silver-eyed cat watches the viewer with terrible patience. I stood there longer than I meant to, feeling like I'd walked in on a conversation.
I left the fan where it was. This morning the flint was on the path, and the fan was gone, and on Mrs Pryce's gatepost, next to the tom, the pearls hung in a perfect loop with the clasp done up. I have decided I shan't ask for them back. Come at Easter if you can. Bring your good gloves and don't go up the forest path without me.
Love, Nell
