Neo-traditional woman portrait on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A stylised female face with dark wavy hair, heavy black eyeliner and lips sits at the centre, wearing pearl necklaces and ornamental gold-toned details. Bold black outlines and smooth shading give the face and hair volume, while sage green and muted tones fill the background, with flowing linework and a sinuous dark strand curling down the arm. The design wraps around the limb with the portrait dominating the composition and the ornament filling the edges.

Marta had carried salt over the Vell pass for eleven winters, and she knew the sound a mule made when the path ahead was wrong. Tonight the beast stopped at the fork below the chapel and would not lift a hoof. Fog lay in the gully like wet wool. She tied the lead to a larch, pulled her shawl close, and felt the strand of pearls at her throat knock against the buckle, a small sound she had come to rely on.

Her grandmother had given her the necklace with a warning: the pearls were not for luck but for counting. Each one was a promise made to the valley spirits, and a traveller who lost one owed the mountain a crossing. Marta had lost none. Yet the fog thickened, and from the dark came a dry rustle, like silk drawn over stone, and something moved along the rock wall where the path bent.
It was her own hair, or it seemed so at first. The dark curls that hung past her collar had loosened in the damp and begun to uncoil, one thick strand sliding over her wrist and out along the slope. It moved with purpose, slow and certain, the way a snake crosses a warm road. Where it touched the frost, the ice turned a grey-green shine, and the path showed itself: a narrow ledge, flat stepping stones, a ribbon of lichen leading upward.
Marta followed. At the chapel gate she turned to thank whatever had walked beside her and found only the larch, the mule, and a pearl lying on the step that had not been there before. She counted her necklace twice and found it one short. She left the pearl where it lay, for the next traveller who could not see the path, then went down into the valley with her shawl open and her hair, for once, lying still.
