The rain has been on the Saturday market since dawn, and the cobbles outside the fish hall have gone the colour of wet slate. I sold four buckets of the red roses to a man who wanted them for a funeral and one bunch to a girl who bought them for herself, which I took as a good sign. Mrs Abernethy has the hat stall under the next awning, and she has been grumbling all morning that the brim of her best black hat has gone limp. I told her a wide brim will take a soaking if you sew the wire back in properly, but she only looked at me the way she looks at the council.

Yesterday a gentleman in a grey coat came round the stalls asking for the woman who makes the lace collars. Nobody would say a word. Mrs Abernethy went quiet, tucked a pin into the band of her hat, and gave him a look from under the brim that sent him off towards the bus station without his change. I have known her twenty years and never once seen her do that.

I am enclosing a pressed rose from the last bunch, the one the girl left on the bench when she thought nobody was watching. It seemed a shame to leave it out in this weather. The red gloves I darned are on the peg by the stove, the ones you said were too bright for a grown woman. Keep them. Write when the weather lifts.
