Woman's profile with roses and a vintage car

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A black and white drawing of a woman in profile with her eyes closed and long dark hair that flows down into a vintage sedan. Roses and small cross and skull-like motifs sit around the car, with a cross drop earring visible. The shading is smooth and detailed on a plain white background inside a black border.

The Fleetwood had been under a tarpaulin in Eddie Marsh's yard since the spring of 1979, and when he finally dragged the sheet back, the paint had gone the colour of old dishwater. Maggie Lowe stood at the gate with her keys in one hand and a carrier bag of supermarket roses in the other, already drooping in the damp. She didn't ask whether it could be saved. She asked how long it would take to make it run.

Eddie took three weeks. He stripped the chrome until it threw light like a spoon, rebuilt the carburettor on the kitchen table, and found a rosary wedged behind the dashboard, its little silver crosses gone black with age. He hung it back from the mirror without being asked. Every evening Maggie came by after her shift at the hospital laundry and sat on an upturned crate, talking about her father, who had bought the car new with money from a summer of pulling pints, and who had driven it to the coast every August until his knees gave out.

On the last Saturday the engine caught on the first turn of the key. Maggie didn't say thank you. She climbed into the driver's seat, smoothed her hair back against the headrest, and drove slowly out of the yard towards the coast road. Eddie watched the tail lights shrink through the drizzle. When he went to clear the gatepost, the carrier bag was still there, the roses limp inside it, and on the passenger seat of the car he had glimpsed a single rose, freshly cut, left like a receipt.
