Her husband Albert sold eels, and sold them badly, and every Thursday he counted the takings twice because he never trusted the first count. One wet morning a stranger in a grey mac bought a single herring, paid in coins nobody had minted in years, and asked who lived upstairs. Albert told him nobody, only smoke. That night Albert climbed the stairs with a torch and a knot in his stomach. The flat was empty. The chair was pushed back from the window, and on the sill sat a tin ashtray with one cigarette still burning, an inch of ash standing up straight as if it had forgotten to fall. Beside it lay the stranger's coins, every one of them gone to grey dust.

Albert counted the takings once the next Thursday, and for the first time in his life he believed the number.
