Woman with flowing hair on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman with long, wind-swept hair and wrapped fabric is drawn in black linework across the outer upper arm, with swirling hair and wave-like shapes filling the surrounding space. The shading is soft, with pale green, pink and yellow washes and little solid black, giving a gentle, painterly finish. The figure fills most of the frame, with the top of the arm and a green garden visible behind it.

Dear Tom,

The tide gave us a woman on Tuesday, though nobody in the Crown will admit it. Mrs Pryce found her on the slipway at first light, long hair plastered flat with weed and a sheet from some drowned bed knotted round her like a sail. She didn't speak. She only lifted both hands to her collarbone and held the cloth there, as if someone might try to take it back.
We put her by the stove in the net loft. By noon her hair had dried in the wind off the harbour and lifted itself out in long waves, green and gold, the way bladderwrack lifts when the tide turns. Father said it was a trick of the light through the salt windows. I told him that was no answer at all.
Last night she went down to the water again, and I followed with the lamp. She did not hurry. At the edge she turned and looked back up the shingle at me, and the garden wall behind the cottages had gone pale with the colour of dawn, pink and yellow, the way the kelp beds look when the sun gets into them.
I shan't tell you she drowned or didn't. You'd only write back asking whether I'd been at the gin. But when you're home in October, bring me one of those blue glass floats from the Dutchman's boat, and I'll leave the loft window open.
Your sister, Ada
