Embracing figures tattoo on side ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several stylised figures clustered together, with heads leaning in and arms wrapped around one another. The linework is soft and painterly, with the robes filled in with swirling, ornamental patterns of circles and florals. Warm reds, oranges, blues and greens dominate the colour palette, and the design fills an oval area on the side of the torso.

The snow had shut the pass for nine days, and the innkeeper's wife at Hollin Gate had stopped counting the travellers who slept in her kitchen. So when four women came down the road at dusk, carrying one lantern between them, she only pointed at the hearth and asked them nothing.

They had a shawl of dyed wool, patterned with rings and flowers the colour of cooked plums and marigold, and they wrapped themselves in it together, heads bent close, arms across each other's shoulders. The eldest said they were walking to the coast to bury a brother. The youngest laughed and said the brother was a goat, and the eldest did not deny it. Nobody let go of the shawl, not even to eat. The innkeeper's wife noticed the way the wool seemed to warm under their hands.
In the night the wind found the chimney and the fire sank to a red eye. She woke to a low singing and went down with a candle. The four of them sat as before, singing into each other's hair so the heat would not escape them, and the lantern was burning steadily though no one had lit it since dusk.
By morning the snow had stopped and the road lay white and clean to the ridge. The bench by the fire was empty, and the shawl was folded there with a single thread of marigold wool caught on the latch. Her husband swore they had gone out by the old drovers' track in the dark. She did not argue. Every winter after, she laid a patterned shawl on that bench, and nobody in the valley ever asked why it was never used for anything else.
