Woman with lion headdress line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing shows a woman with long wavy hair and a lion's head worn over her head like a headdress. She has painted or marked lines on her cheeks, a band across her forehead, drop earrings and layered beaded necklaces. The drawing uses fine, even linework with no shading or colour, and the figure fills the centre of a plain pale sheet.

Dear Ruth,

The beads came back from the restringer on Tuesday, all two hundred and eleven of them, in a paper twist that had split at one corner. I sat with them on the kitchen table until the light went, sorting the bone ones from the clay, because your mother would have wanted the order right before anyone else touched the thread. Mrs Penhallow swears the lion's head has not had a moth in it since 1961, and I believe her, though she still sprinkles camphor in its ears every spring.

You will remember it hangs in the back passage above the coats. It came over with your grandfather from the port at Mombasa, though he never once said which ship, and it has a crack along the muzzle where someone dropped it on the stairs. We are to bring it down for the wedding. Your Tom says the vicar will think it a costume, and I told him the vicar can think what he likes, provided he does not sit under it.

Thursday came in grey and the sea was flat as a plate. I went up the hill to the chapel with the box under my arm and found the door open and nobody inside but the wind, which had got in through a broken pane and was moving the hymn sheets about. I stood there holding the lion and felt, quite suddenly, that everyone we had lost was waiting on the step to see how we would manage. Then I laughed, because the lion looked smug, and set the box down on the front pew.

Come on the train on Friday. Bring the good shoes.

Love, Aunt Bev
