Woman with ram horns and a red apple
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman in profile looks down at a bitten red apple held in her hand, with tulips and curling ram horns woven through her hair. The portrait is rendered in soft, layered greyscale shading with fine hair strands and detailed highlights on the horns and petals. The apple is the only colour in the piece, drawing the eye to the lower centre of the composition.

Sit closer, you, because the fire's down to its last red and the wind is working under the barn door the way it does every January. This is the story of Orla Penhallow, who was born in the lambing shed at Coldharbour Farm with a pair of ram's horns curled tight against her skull, and who was never once ashamed of them.

Her mother bound tulip bulbs into her hair every spring to hide the horns from the vicar, and every spring the tulips split their papery skins and bloomed right through the binding. The old apple tree at the top of the orchard had gone barren after the great frost, all but one branch, and on that branch hung a single fruit, red as a robin's breast. The farm men had sworn no one should touch it. Orla touched it anyway, on the morning of the first thaw, and she took one bite before the gate began to creak and the cold came down the hill like a bailiff.
What happened next is the part I'm not supposed to tell. The ewes went quiet, the old ram went blind in one eye, and the frost stayed on the valley until Orla walked down to the pens herself in the dark, holding the bitten apple out in her open palm, and asked the flock what they wanted her to give back. Nobody answered. So she left the apple on the gatepost, and by morning the tulips were open along every hedge in the parish, red as that apple, and the snow had gone off the top field.
Your grandfather swore it was true, and he never once went near that gate in winter. Mind the fire now, and take the last of the apples off the sill. Bite it and keep the core, mind, because the core is where the winter sits.
