Woman with revolver and Golden Gate Bridge
Colour · Flash
A profile of a woman with long red-brown hair smokes a cigarette, framed by a large dark feathered headdress or wing shape. Behind her shoulder sit an American flag, a revolver held across the chest, a city tower, and the Golden Gate Bridge, with orange California poppies and sprigs of foliage at the base. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft shading and muted colour on a textured parchment-toned background.

Dear Ruth,

You will not believe what Aunt Dell did at the reception, so I'm writing it down before the telling sands it smooth. We were out on the terrace at the Presidio, the fog coming in over the bridge one red arm at a time, and the band had stopped so the best man could find his cufflinks. Dell lit a cigarette off the candle on the cake table, which the florist had asked her not to do, and nobody argued.
She had the revolver in her bag. Grandad's old Colt, the one he swore he'd never fired at anything living. She took it out, not to point at anyone, just to rest it on the balustrade beside the orange poppies she'd pinned to her lapel, and said, "Well, Frank, you always did like a view." Then she looked out at the bridge and told us about the summer she and Frank drove up the coast with forty dollars and one bullet between them, how the bullet went to a jackrabbit on the Big Sur road, and how they ate it that night in a motel that smelled of wet ash.
Nobody cried, which surprised me. Dell just tapped her ash, watched the smoke thin in the damp air, and said the bride should marry for the company and never for the view.
I keep thinking about that jackrabbit. I'm sending you the photo of the cake.
Love, Mike
