Captain America flash with eagle and banners

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A coloured flash design showing a comic-style Captain America figure at the centre, holding a striped star shield with a raised fist beside him. Surrounding him are a spread-winged eagle, a red rose, lightning bolts, a burst reading KAPOW, and banners with the words Death Before Dishonor and Forever. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a beige background with small star marks give it a classic American traditional look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, you're letting the draught in. This is the story of the summer Dessie Crane painted a hero on the shutter of the Costas' chip shop in Margate, and the gulls wouldn't land on it for a fortnight.

Dessie was a sign-writer with a tin of enamel, one good brush and a tongue sharper than the brush. Mrs Costa had told him his gold leaf lettering looked like a dog had walked through a bakery, and Dessie said it was the nicest thing anyone had said about his lettering in years. So he took the old shutter down to bare boards, mixed red, blue and cream, and painted a fellow in a star-spangled jumper with a shield the size of a cartwheel. Above him went a scroll that said DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR, because he'd never spelled a word right in his life and he wasn't about to start on a Tuesday.

Then came the lightning, great zigzags down both sides, and an eagle with its wings flung wide over the lot. He finished with a burst off the fist that said KAPOW in letters so loud the Costas' Alsatian barked at it for an hour. Mrs Costa came out with her arms folded and studied it a long time. 'It's ridiculous,' she said. 'Leave it up, though.'

The council sent a man in the spring to paint it over. He stood at the bottom with his pot of grey and couldn't lift the brush, because the rose in the corner had a dew drop on it that looked exactly like a real one, and the eagle's eye seemed to be following him. He went home without a word. Dessie swears the paint's still there under the grey, if you know where to scratch. Whatever you think of that, the chips in Margate have never tasted better.
