Witch profile with roses and banner

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A stylised illustration shows a woman in profile with long wavy brown hair and a glowing red horned headpiece, set against a pale circular halo. Two red roses with green leaves sit at the lower right, and a tan scroll banner below reads Witches be crazy in red lettering. Bold outlines, smooth shading and a warm brown parchment-style background give the piece a neo-traditional look.

Dear Aud, The last of the Bramleys came down on Tuesday, and I have been up the top orchard every afternoon since, because Mab Harrow has finally let me carry the ladders for her. You will laugh. Everyone in Ledbury says she is mad, and the Women's Institute have been muttering about it since Whitsun. Mab only shrugs and says the village has never once been right about anything it could see from the lych gate.

Her hat is the strangest thing. It is a red iron piece with two curved points that her grandmother wore to the autumn fair, and she puts it on whenever a wasp gets into the cider press. On Thursday the moon came up behind her with a ring round it like a wet thumbprint, and every tree in the row went still, the way they do before rain. I asked whether the ring was a sign. She said it was only the moon being nosy.

We picked the late roses off the wall for the harvest supper, a dozen bunches, and she made me stop at each bush to say thank you. I thought it daft until a wasp went straight past my ear and didn't touch me. Don't tell Mother that. She'll say I am going the same way as the rest of the parish.

I'll post you a jar of crab apple jelly on Saturday. Keep one back for yourself and screw the lid down hard, because Mab says jam set in a warm kitchen sulks and then goes to waste. Your loving sister, Nell.
