Woman with skull and two wolves design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing shows a woman with long flowing hair and a floral headdress, cradling a human skull. Two wolves flank her, one on each side, with a candle, dice and small objects drawn at the lower edge. The linework is fine and detailed, with hatched shading on the skull, wolves and fabric, and the design is drawn in black and grey on a pale background.

The wolves came down from the fells the week the thaw broke, and Maud Harrow, who had kept a candle burning in the lych-gate cottage for forty years, set two saucers of mutton fat on the step and did not go to bed. Her brother had never believed in the dice. He had thrown them on the kitchen table the night before he went through the ice on Gilder's Mere, and the bones had come up showing three sixes, which his wife said meant nothing but a tired hand.

Maud did not argue. She fetched the tin from the dresser, bone dice worn smooth as river stones, and the skull that had sat beside the clock since her grandmother's time. Nobody in the village knew whose it was. The parson said it belonged to a Viking. The wolves, she had learned, did not care either way. They sat one on each side of the door with their grey eyes half shut, as though someone had hired them.
Death came at the second hour in a coat of wet linen and asked for a fair game. Maud set the candle between them so the wax ran into the saucer, and she counted out the stakes: one year of her own life and one of the mere-keeper's boy, who was sleeping upstairs with his boots still on. "Roll," she said.
He rolled a double six and smiled like a man who had never lost a hand in his life. She rolled a seven and laughed, and the wolves rose without a sound and went out into the dark. In the morning the candle had burned down to a stub, the skull was turned to face the wall, and three of the dice were lying in the saucer with their pips all showing sixes.
