Sugar skull woman with roses and lantern
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil-style line drawing shows a woman with a sugar skull face paint pattern, long flowing hair and a flower in her hair. Roses and leaves frame her on both sides, and a beaded chain loops through the composition above a lantern containing a candle. The linework is clean and bold with light shading on the hair and background, and the design is uncoloured.

The lantern is yours to carry now, and the old man's cough is the last thing you hear from the hut before the snow takes the road. Marta, who kept the Scarrow Pass light for thirty winters, pressed the brass handle into your glove and told you to keep the candle low. Wind eats flame up there, she said. Give it only what it needs.

The first hour is easy. The track threads between rocks furred with lichen, and wild roses grow in the hollows where the sheep don't reach, pale bloom and dark leaf, absurd at this height. Beads of frost hang from the wire that marks the edge of the path, and you count them the way Marta taught you, one for every step that brings you nearer the hut below the saddle. By the second hour your fingers have stopped feeling the handle.
Then you see the other light. It sits low on the far slope, a flicker that does not lean with the wind, and you realise it has been waiting there since dusk. Marta never mentioned that. You stop, cup your palm around the flame and call into the white. Nothing answers, but the far candle dips once, then twice, as if someone over there has been counting too.
You keep your hand around the glass all the way down. At the bottom the hut door stands open and the stove is lit, and on the sill sits a second lantern, its candle burned to a stub. You set yours beside it. Some lights are only meant to be handed on.
