Ouija board heart with moon and gem
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A heart-shaped Ouija board sits at the centre of the design, with YES, NO, the alphabet, the numbers 1 to 0 and GOOD BYE across the planchette area. A pale yellow and green crescent moon sits behind the board, with a red gemstone at the top and a dangling crystal with droplets below. Bold black outlines and grey shading contrast with the yellow, teal and red colour fills, against pale skin.

The planchette had stuck on NO for three nights running, and Mrs Hosking blamed the damp that crept up from the harbour wall. Her daughter Jenna blamed her mother. They sat at the kitchen table with the heart-shaped board between them, the candle burning low beside the salt cellar, while the moon painted on its face looked up at the ceiling as though it had better things to do.

On the fourth night the glass moved. It slid past the numbers without stopping, past the O and the R, and halted under the crescent where the yellow paint had flaked. Jenna read the letters aloud as they came: C, A, R, D. Then a pause long enough for the kettle to start ticking as it cooled. Then D, I, A, M, O, N, D.
"That's Uncle Ron's word," Mrs Hosking said. "He shouted it at the Legion every Friday."
Jenna did not answer. She was counting the beads along the wooden heart, a row of tiny spheres like a rosary someone had dropped into the grain. Her uncle had not finished a crossword in forty years, and he had never once in his life spelled a word he could not shout.
The glass lifted and hovered over GOOD BYE. Neither of them touched it. Mrs Hosking reached for the crystal drop at her throat and found it swinging on its chain, though there was no draught in the room. "Ask it where he's gone," Jenna said. Her mother shook her head. The glass slid to YES, then, very neatly, back to GOOD BYE, and stayed there until the candle guttered out and they sat in the dark, listening to the tide come in under the harbour wall.
