The tattoo spells the word words in bold black serif lettering, with a superscript numeral 3 raised after the final letter. The wrist is shown from the palm side with the fingers curled at the top of the frame. The ink is solid black with no shading, set against a pale, slightly reddened skin tone and a light blue surface beneath.

Dear Mabel, The typewriter came through Kestrel Bridge on Tuesday, strapped to a handcart and guarded by a man who would not give his name. Pieter Oskamp at the customs desk wanted it declared as machinery, which it is, but he also wanted to know what it had typed, and I could not tell him because the ribbon was blank.

So I sat at the counter and struck a line across the back of his declaration form to prove the keys still worked. Words, it said, in that heavy old face the Olympia always makes. Then I could not help myself and added a small raised three after it. Pieter leaned over my shoulder and asked what the number was for. Three times the words, I told him, and each one heavier than the crate. He did not laugh. He stamped the form twice and waved the cart through, which is the nearest thing to a joke I have had from him in six years.

The man with the handcart is called Anselm Riedl. At the gate he said the machine belonged to his sister, who types out the letters that prisoners in the eastern district are allowed to send home, and that she had been waiting a long time for a new ribbon. I gave him the spare from my drawer without asking for the fee, and he thanked me as though I had handed him a passport.

Send the good carbon paper when you can. I have started a list of everything that crossed the bridge today, and at the bottom I have written the total, lifting the last figure above the line so that anyone reading it will know it is only the beginning. Your sister, Greta.
