X-wing and TIE fighter forearm tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown, one above the other. The upper forearm carries an outlined X-wing starfighter with its four wings spread in an X shape, and the lower forearm carries an outlined TIE fighter with a shaded central cockpit. The linework is clean and even, with solid black areas used sparingly, and the image is entirely black and grey.

Dear Tom, we are four weeks out from Valparaiso and the swell has finally gone flat enough that I can write without the page sliding off the bench. The cook has taken to calling me the Admiral since I started building that kit you posted to me at Panama, the two little fighters you swore would survive the damp. The X-wing came out fine. Its wings snap open like a fan when you press the pin, and I have it hung above my bunk on a length of fishing line so it swings whenever the ship rolls.

The TIE is the trouble. I glued its ball cockpit on crooked in the second week, and Ravi says it looks like a bowling ball that has been dropped down a stairwell. I told him that was the whole point, the thing is meant to be ugly and hungry. He called me soft in the head and I called him a bloody Scot, which he is not, and we are friends again now.
Here is what I keep thinking about. Last night the wireless went quiet for six hours, and I sat on the deck with the two of them in my lap, one in each hand, trying to decide which I would rather be. The X-wing, I think, because it can carry the hard stuff home. Then the wind shifted and the hull groaned, and I found I was holding the TIE tight against my chest so it would not crack.
Keep this short, I am on watch at six. Write back and tell me the dog has not eaten the postcard.
