Black and grey fine line tattoo of an arrow on a forearm, beside a matching bow tattoo on a wrist.

Matching arrow and bow tattoos on forearm and wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arm tattoos are shown side by side in a black and white photograph. On the left forearm, an arrow with a feathered fletching runs vertically, with small bead-like details along its shaft and a triangular tip. On the right wrist, a curved bow with scroll ends and a small ornamental section at the grip is outlined in fine, even black lines with light shading.

Dear Win,

You will not believe what the Pargeters have done with the back bedroom. Mr Pargeter came down to breakfast this morning with a bundle of gull feathers tied in string and asked me for a sharp knife, and I gave him the bread knife out of pure curiosity. He has been fletching arrows at the kitchen table all week, while his sister Ruth has been out on the shingle every evening with a length of ash she swears she pulled from the surf at Happisburgh.

Sunday they walked to the end of the pier at low tide. I followed with the washing basket, because there is no point pretending I wasn't curious. Ruth strung the bow, a grey curve of wood with brass scrolls at the grip, and loosed the first arrow out over the flats. It dropped into the wet sand a hundred yards short. Mr Pargeter laughed so hard he had to sit down on a bollard. Ruth did not laugh. She fetched the arrow, wiped it on her skirt, and shot again, and this time it sailed clean over the lifeboat house and into the marram.

Mr Pargeter took the Thursday boat for Hull. He left the bow on the hall table with a note that said only, Keep it strung, you'll want the practice. Ruth still sleeps with her window open. Last night I heard the twang from the garden, once, and then nothing but the sea.

Yours, Edie
