Yellow brick road and ruby slippers

Back · Colour · Photo

The design shows a yellow brick road leading to a pair of red ruby slippers, with a faint rainbow arcing above and green grass blades at the left edge. The words There's no place like home run in green script beside the slippers. The outlines are simple and the shading is soft, and the photo is taken at a slight angle on smooth skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ida Cawley had painted the path herself the summer after the lodgers stopped coming, a yellow stripe of ochre laid across the cracked concrete from the back step to the gate, because her husband had always said a path should lead somewhere a person wanted to go. Now the paint had worn to the colour of old butter, and the gulls walked along it as if they held the lease.

The new lodger arrived on a Tuesday in October with one suitcase and a pair of red patent shoes wrapped in a tea towel. Ida noticed the shoes before she noticed his face. They were the sort you saw in the window of the hat shop on the front, and they were far too good for the damp stairs of Sea View House. He said his name was Owen, that he worked nights at the lifeboat station, and he asked whether the rainbow over the pier was always that faint, as though he expected it to mean something.

Over three weeks he fixed the gutter, the loose stair rod and the gate latch, and he never once asked for the rent to be lowered. On the last evening of the month he stood at the gate with his suitcase and the red shoes on his feet, and Ida understood he was leaving for somewhere farther off than Margate. "You'll not need those on the sand," she said. He looked down at the yellow path, then back at her. "No," he said. "But I wanted to walk it once."

Ida watched him go along the ochre stripe to the pavement and did not wave. Then she fetched her brush from the shed, knelt on the step, and touched up the places where the gulls had scuffed it, so that the next lodger would find the way marked clear.
