Small crown tattoo on the side torso
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small crown is tattooed in solid black ink on the side of the torso, with pointed fleur-de-lis style tips and a decorative band of small dot-like motifs. The linework is clean and bold, with the crown shaded in solid black rather than greys. The warm-toned photograph is framed close, with light denim clothing filling the right side of the frame.

Dear Tom, the crown came in on Tuesday, wrapped in a yellowed teacloth and tied with green string, and I have not stopped turning it over since. It is smaller than you would expect, no bigger than a wren's egg, cut from a single sheet of tin and blackened so the light catches only the points. Mrs Abernethy swore it had been her father's, though the pawn ticket was in a hand I could not read and the name had been crossed through with a single neat line.

The band is the odd part. Someone has punched a row of tiny holes around it, eleven on each side, and I spent an hour under the lamp with my glass trying to decide whether they were stars or spare nails. I suspect the former. Sixteen years behind this counter and I have never wanted to keep a thing, but I have put this one in the back drawer beside the good scissors, and when the shop goes quiet after nine I find myself taking it out again.
Last night the rain came down Briggate like gravel, and a girl I did not know knocked on the glass after I had half drawn the shutter. She wanted to know if we would take a crown. I said we only took gold and silver. She laughed and said it was tin, that her grandmother had worn one just like it in a school play in 1951, and that the points had been filed down afterwards so the costume would fit. She only wanted to see whether anyone would still recognise it.
I have bought a small file and a tin of solder. Come up at Christmas and I will show you what I mean. Before I put out the lamp I counted the dots again, eleven and eleven, and wondered which one was meant to be the twelfth.
