Yin yang and sun and moon tattoo designs
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
Two black and white tattoo design drawings sit on a plain white background. The yin yang on the upper left has ornate geometric fills and curling vine and heart motifs on its white half. The sun with a crescent moon and a face, below and to the right, has bold spiky rays and fine engraved linework inside the moon.

Dear Nell,

The lamp failed again on Tuesday, and I am writing this at the kitchen table by the stove because the glass has gone milky and I have nothing better to do with my hands while the fog sits on the reef. Mr Pryce says the Board will send a man when the spring tides allow, though he said the same at Michaelmas, and I have started to believe the Board is itself a kind of weather.
Something odd has happened. The Penhale boy came up on Sunday with a slate he had scratched over with chalk: a sun with its rays spiked like a cockerel's comb, and a moon tucked inside it wearing a face. He said it was for the wall above the lamp room door. I told him the sun does its own business and the moon has never once asked my permission to rise. He grinned and drew another thing beside it, a round stone split white and black, the white half all curls and little hearts, the black half jagged like the rocks on the north ledge. Then he asked which side the boats come home on, and I hadn't an answer.
Last night the fog thinned and the moon came up over the reef, and for an hour the whole sea was the white half of his stone, silver and quiet, with the black water hiding underneath where the Ellen went down. I stood at the gallery rail with a lantern I wasn't allowed to light and thought about how a light is only ever for the people on the wrong side of the dark.
I've written to the Board again. I have also asked Pryce to climb up and clean the glass himself, which he will hate. Come at the end of the month if you can. Bring the chalk.
Your loving sister, Margaret
