Black ink line drawing of a globe in a circle, with North America and parts of Europe and Asia formed from daisy flowers with solid centres, in a botanical design style.

Daisy-filled globe line drawing

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A circular globe outline is filled with clusters of daisy-like flowers that form the shapes of continents, mainly North America and parts of the surrounding land and sea edges. The drawing uses bold, even black linework with solid dark centres on the flowers and plain white negative space. It is a monochrome design with no shading or colour, and the flowers are spaced so the continent shapes read clearly against the outline.

Dear Marjorie,

It is gone half eleven and the Corporation lamps are buzzing beyond the allotment gate, so you will forgive the smudge. Mr Okafor finally let me have the old bowling green at the back of Chapel Street, and I have been on my knees in the wet soil since Tuesday, pressing ox-eye daisy plugs into the shape you sketched on the back of your postcard. You said to start at the top of the world and work down, so I did. Canada went in first, then the long bulge of the States, and the grey Atlantic is still bare clay that the foxes keep digging up.

The trouble is the Gulf. Every time I set a plug where Mexico should go, the rain floods it out by morning. Last night I sat on an upturned crate with a flask and watched the streetlight over the wall, thinking how daft this is, a grown woman at midnight arguing with a drainage ditch about geography. Then a lad came past on a bicycle with no lamp, stopped, and asked what I was building. I told him the whole continent and he laughed, said it looked like a flower, which I suppose it is.

I have enclosed a photograph. It will not show much in this light, but the white petals picked up the moon well enough. Tell Dad the Hudson Bay bloom came up first, the centre gone dark and bigger than my fist, and I think of it as your side of the water.

Love, Ruth
