Nell Harrow had been hauling coal up the Tolley cut for nineteen years, and for the last eleven she had shared the lock at Scarrow Weir with Abe Doyle, whose boat was the Lantern Mary. Her hull was black with a white burst painted along its side, his was white with a black cogwheel, and every morning they measured each other's paint like two dogs at a gate. Nobody on the towpath remembered which of them had started it.

The March flood tore a willow off the bank above the weir and jammed it crosswise in the lock chamber. Abe was already there with a bow saw when she arrived, sleeves rolled to the elbow, shouting at the water as if it owed him rent. They worked the trunk from either side for two hours, the river shoving at the wood, neither speaking except to call the swing. When the last branch gave, the log rolled free and nearly took his tiller arm, and she caught his coat without thinking.

Afterwards they sat on her gunwale with a flask of tea that tasted of diesel. He said the lock keeper's report would name them both as fools. She said it would name them as the only two boats that had bothered to come. He pulled a tin of white gloss from his locker, she pulled a tin of black from hers, and they repainted the scorched lock beam between them, one half each, arguing over the width of the lines.

By dusk the beam carried both paints, black on the lock side and white on the weir side, and neither of them would say which one had taken the better of the other.
