Crescent moon and planet dot design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical stack of solid black shapes sits beneath a thick crescent moon. The column includes small and medium circles, a ringed planet tilted diagonally, and a larger circle with two white dots that reads like a face. The design uses flat fills with no shading, shown in black on a plain white background.

The moon was still a fingernail over the Tonopah road when I stopped counting miles and started counting lights. My uncle Ray always said you could steer by anything if you knew the order it came in. Moon first, then the little ones, then the big one that sits like a pale face on the horizon. He said it the way other men said grace.

The ringed planet was the Starlite Motel sign, half-dead and tilted on its pole where a lorry had clipped it years back. Ray swore the rings were real, that the owner had painted them on with a bucket of Dulux and a broom. I believed him lying in the cab bunk with the engine ticking down. Past the sign the road ran straight as a ruler for forty miles, and nothing lived out there but jackrabbits and one water tower with a dented crown.
Near Goldfield, a pair of headlights came up behind me, low and patient. I counted them the way Ray taught me: small, small, big. They stayed on my bumper for twelve miles without once swinging out to pass. When I finally pulled into the layby, the lights stopped too, and the road went dark except for a single orange glow where a driver should have been.
I flashed my lamps twice. Nothing answered. I sat with the engine off and the moon finishing its curve above the windscreen, then wrote the last stop in Ray's order in the logbook, the small dot that means you have arrived. Underneath it I drew two white eyes, because that was how he always signed off. Then I drove on, and the road kept counting for me.
