Yin yang with paw prints
Black and grey · Flash
A bold yin yang symbol enclosed in a circle, with the black and white halves separated by a curved S-shaped division. A paw print sits in the centre of each half, the white print on the black side and the black print on the white side. The design uses solid fills and sharp edges with thin crescent-shaped highlights along the outer ring, in pure black and white with no shading or colour.

The herring boats had come home short for three weeks running, and the people of Skarra blamed the dogs, as people on small islands will. There were only two of them. The black one kept to the strand and the white one kept to the high cliff path, and neither had an owner who would admit to them.

Each dusk they met at the standing stone where the two paths cross. They touched noses, then the white dog trotted down to the sand and the black dog climbed up to the peat, so that each walked the other's road home. Their prints were the only marks left on the island once the tide came in. Old Maud, who had buried two husbands and had no patience left for either, said the dogs were stealing the fish-luck and sending it the wrong way round.
Ada kept the headland lamp and had no time for Maud's talk, but one evening she followed the dogs with the lamp unlit in her hand. At the stone she watched the white dog lie down on the black rock and the black dog lie down on the sand, and each pressed a paw into ground that was not its own. The prints did not stay put. They lifted off the stone like pale moths and drifted out over the water.
The tide, she saw, was following the marks. Every boat that went out that night came back full, because the sea had been shown which way to turn. Ada lit the lamp and walked the cliff path herself, once up and once down, and the nets came up heavy for the rest of the season.
