Yin yang with sun, mountains and planet

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A circular yin yang design filled with stippled dotwork. One half shows a ringed planet, stars and a spiral galaxy, while the other shows a sun with radiating rays, small birds, clouds and rocky mountain peaks. The shading is built entirely from dots, giving soft tonal gradation within crisp circular outlines, and the design is centred on the leg with a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The plate had to be finished before the Thursday carrier, and Nell Harrow had pricked the same ring of Saturn three times because her father always said dots were honest. A line could hide a mistake, but a dot sat where you put it. The copper disc lay under the bench lamp, and downstairs the shop bell rang as her father argued with a man about the price of a brass sextant.

The commission was for a schoolmaster in Kendal who wanted one plate for the night sky above his house and the other for the day that rose over the fells behind it. Her father had drawn the mountains in pencil and handed her the bradawl. Stipple them, don't shade them, he said. Let the light come through the gaps. She had complained that dots took a week, and he had said that was the point of them.

On the last night she sat with the awl over the sun, where the rays spread out like the spokes of a cartwheel, and found her hand would not keep still. Her father came up the stairs with two mugs of tea and stood looking at the plate for a long time. He did not mention the Saturn or the wobbling rays. He took the awl from her, pricked a single dot into the white core of the spiral galaxy, and said the middle of a spiral was the one place you never had to be exact.

In the morning she wrapped both plates in felt and laid them in the carrier's box, the dark night and the bright day pressed back to back so the two halves would meet on the schoolmaster's wall. Her thumb had left a faint smudge of ink on the lid. She did not wipe it off.
