Moon, clouds and waves in a circle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo on the outer forearm shows a moon behind clouds above a choppy sea with breaking waves. The scene is built from fine stippled dots that create the shading across the sky and clouds, while the waves use denser dots and lighter open lines for their crests. The design is entirely in black and grey ink, and the circular frame sits centrally on the arm against a dark background.

Sit yourselves down, the lot of you, and mind the spilt lemonade on the boards. You want the one about the Saturday the sea came up the steps of the Marine Ballroom? Right then, but no interrupting me when I get to the fiddler.

His name was Harold Quirk, and he would not play a note after eleven without first looking out of the tall windows over the harbour. Some nights the moon sat behind the clouds like a coin under a cloth, and Harold said that was the only honest light a man could trust. That Saturday the wind had got up off the Dogger Bank and the water was slapping the groyne, white crests tossing up as if somebody below was counting them.
Nell Garvey was at the piano that year, sixteen and sharp as a pin, and she kept the time while the couples turned round and round. At half past eleven the power went out with a pop, and in the dark the only thing you could see was the moon pushing through a gap in the clouds, and the sea below it lit up silver from one end of the bay to the other. Nobody moved. Harold lifted his bow, looked at the water, and played the last waltz to the window instead of to us.
By morning the tide had crept up the stairs and left a ring of salt on the dance floor, round as a plate, and the sanders never got it out. That is why we keep the windows open on a wild night, and why Harold's fiddle is still hanging on the wall by the door.
