Hokusai-style wave in a circle on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular tattoo shows a curling wave with fine, layered crests on the left and a smaller wave in the lower section. The sky inside the circle is shaded with stippled dots, and a small peaked shape sits near the right edge. The image is in black ink and grey tones, with the design centred on the photographed forearm against a light background.

The lamp had been dark for three nights when Dad finally let me climb the tower alone. He said the glass needed wiping and the brass wanted oil, and I was twelve and could be trusted with both. What he did not say was that the swell off Skerra had grown teeth since spring, and a wave that climbs the rock can stand taller than the gallery rail.

I counted the rungs of the spiral stair the way he had taught me, one for each breath. At the top the sea looked flat and grey as pewter, but the foam along the reef stood up in rows like the pleated frills on a Sunday dress, curling over and falling back. Beyond the last buoy, where the water turned the colour of ink, a second line was rising. Above the haze a pale peak stood out, the same shape as the mountain printed on the tea tin in our kitchen. Dad said it was a hill in the next county. I had always wanted it to be somewhere else.
The wave reached the rock as I lifted the cloth. It did not crash so much as lean, a long dark shoulder gathering the light, and for one moment I was level with its crest, close enough to see the spray hang in the air like smoke. I held the rail. The lamp gave its steady flash below me, and I understood that what I had been afraid of was only the sea doing what it always did, which was to come back.
When Dad came up the stair with the lantern, he found me wiping the glass in slow circles, round and round, the way you clean a window that already shines. He did not ask what I had seen. He took the cloth from my hand and finished the other side.
