Realistic pencil drawing of a black wolf and a white wolf curled together in a yin yang circle, with red and blue eyes.

Yin yang wolves pencil design

Realism · Mixed · Flash

A black wolf and a white wolf curl around each other inside a circle, forming a yin yang shape. The fur is drawn in fine, directional pencil strokes, with heavier graphite shading on the black wolf and lighter tones on the white one. Both wolves have small touches of red and blue in their eyes, and the composition sits centred on a plain white background.

Snow had been falling on Scar Fell for three days when the black wolf stopped pacing the ridge and lay down across the white one's trail. Nobody in Garsdale had seen the pair apart since the thaw before, when two sets of prints came down to the sheepfold side by side and the shepherd's collie was never found. Old Hanne at the inn called them brothers. The lambing men called them rivals. Her grandson, who had gone up with a lantern, swore he saw them share a ewe without a single snap at each other.

Their den sat under a shelf of grey rock where the wind could not reach. In the lantern light the black wolf's coat swallowed the glow, while the white wolf's fur gave it back as frost, so that in the mornings the hollow looked like two halves of one moon. They slept curled so tightly that neither could stand without waking the other, and every dawn they argued in low grumbles over who would go down to the beck first.

Then the hunter came up from the valley road with a rifle and a dog of his own. The white wolf went down the slope to draw him off, a pale shape in the drifts, and the black wolf stayed at the rock and watched the tracks lead away. For a long hour the snow kept falling on the open ground. Nothing came back up the slope but the wind.

When the thaw came, the shepherds found the hollow bare in the middle, a ring of dark earth with pale moss at its edge, the two halves meeting nose to tail. Hanne said that was the wolves' doing. Her grandson said it was only the snow melting in the shape it had been pressed. Neither of them went up to check.
