You have been pulling bindweed from the rhubarb since four o'clock, and the light has gone the colour of weak tea by the time the gate latch lifts on its own. Mrs Hadley's gate has never latched properly. Nobody in the village minds, because the wolf that comes through it has never touched the hens, and it has never touched you either. It stands on the path between the bean rows and looks at you with one amber eye, the other half lost in a tangle of bare branches and grey cloud, as if the wood behind it had climbed onto its face to see what you were doing.

Tonight it does not stay. It turns and goes down the orchard towards the wall, and you follow, because the frost is coming and the cold frames are still open. At the foot of the wall, where the old pear tree leans, there is a hollow scraped in the leaf mould. In the hollow sits a crow's egg, blue as a bruise, with a small silver button balanced on top. Somebody has been here before you. Somebody has been leaving things for a long time.

You kneel and do not touch the egg. The moon sits above the wall like a coin on a saucer, and the tree shadows across the lawn are all the shapes of the wood you have never walked into. You understand that the wolf was never guarding the garden. It was showing you where the wood begins.

You fetch the spade from the shed and dig a hole beside the pear tree, deep enough for roots. When you are done you leave the gate open behind you.
