Zombie Alice and Cheshire cat with lettering
Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a stitched, button-eyed Alice with blonde hair and a blue dress beside a pink Cheshire cat with a button eye and a wide grin. A pocket watch hangs from the cat's tail, and the phrase We're all mad here is written in black hand-lettering to the right. The ink work uses fine dark outlines with soft watercolour washes of pink, blue and yellow on a plain pale background.

Dear Marjorie,

You will not believe the state of the marquee after Nell's wedding. The reception was held at Fennick Hall, the one with the croquet lawn nobody has mown since the war, and the vicar's wife came dressed as a teapot. Half the guests were made of felt or had buttons sewn where their eyes ought to be. Nell insisted it was a theme and not a mistake, and I was too tired to argue.
The ring bearer went missing before the vows. We found him an hour later in the orchard, perched on a low branch with a pink tabby grin, dangling a silver pocket watch from his tail and telling the cook it was always a quarter past whatever time you happened to want. He had pinned Nell's veil to the wall with a hatpin. Nobody could say where he had come from. The bride's brother swore the cat had been in the cake, and then swore it was the cake.
Still, the bride was happy. When the groom asked her, over the sponge, whether she thought everyone present was quite sane, she only laughed and said the trick was to find your own sort and stop worrying about the rest. Then she took the watch from the cat, wound it, and set it going on the top table. Nobody has yet got it to show the right time, but the cake was cut and the dancing went on until four.
Write soon, and tell me whether your roses came up after all.
Yours in mismatched buttons, Hester
