We're all mad here design with teapot and watch

Mixed · Flash

A pencil drawing of a tattoo design on paper, showing a purple Mad Hatter top hat with a pink scarf at the top, the script words "We're all mad here" running down the centre, a grey teapot pouring into a teacup, and an open pocket watch with Roman numerals at the bottom. The hat and scarf are coloured, while the teapot, cup, watch and lettering are shaded in grey, with soft pencil shading on the objects. The plain grey background fills the frame evenly.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the urn, because Mr Pargeter never once let anybody refill it by hand. Forty years since Form Four and you still look at the door as if the bell might go. The committee made me stand up here, so I'll tell you the one about the tea table, and you can throw biscuits if I go wrong.

In the summer of the leaving year, Danny Lowther came into the art room with a top hat from his uncle's theatre, a scarf the colour of boiled ham, and a pocket watch that had belonged to nobody's grandad because it ran fast. He sat at the end of the long bench and poured tea into a cup with no handle. When Miss Achterberg asked what he thought he was doing, he said, "We're all mad here, miss, and the clock's only got the one hand to prove otherwise." Nobody laughed except the cup, which chipped on the saucer.

Danny moved away the week after results day. The watch stayed in the drawer of that bench for thirty years, stopped at the minute the lunch bell went, and every tea party we have held since has started with somebody pouring for the empty chair. Last month the caretaker found the drawer open and the hat on the hook, and nobody in this hall could say who had been sitting there.

So I'll finish the way he would have wanted. Pour yourselves a cup, and if your cup has no handle, that means it's yours to keep. The clock says twelve, it always does at a party, and it's nearly time to drink. Mind the chipped one. It's Danny's.
