Stitched doll girl holding a cupcake
Black and grey · Flash
A cartoon girl with a large head and a stitched, grinning mouth has a large button over one eye and a smaller button on the other side of her face. She wears a striped bow in her hair and holds a cupcake with a cherry on top, with a frilled skirt and stitched limbs. The drawing uses soft pencil shading and dark outlines on a plain white background, with a centred composition.

Mother Agnes had run out of buttons by the time the Harrow boy came up the lane asking for a doll with two good eyes. She had the big brass one from her husband's coat, and she sewed it over the left side of the rag face because the right side had gone soft and wouldn't hold a stitch. The boy watched her with his hands in his pockets and said that dolls were meant to look at you, not past you.

So she made the second eye from a little shirt button, the kind from a child's Sunday collar, and sewed it low on the cheek where it could see the lane. She stitched the mouth wide, a grin that went nearly to the ears, because she had been told once that a smile was the cheapest thing to give a child. For hair she had only black wool and a striped ribbon left over from the spring fair, and she tied the bow a little crooked on purpose.
The boy came back on the wedding morning, when the whole village was at the church and the bells were still tuning up. He had the doll under his coat and a cupcake from the baker's in his other hand, its cherry squashed flat by his thumb. He said the bride had wanted sweets for the girl who sat alone at the back, and that the girl had said she would only eat cake if it came from a doll. Agnes laughed until she had to sit on the step.
The doll never looked anywhere it wasn't meant to after that. It watched the lane, and it watched the church door, and when the bride came out in her white dress with rice in her hair, the button eye turned to her as if it had been waiting all along.
