Zombie pony in a bat-filled frame
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stitched, teal zombie pony with a rainbow mane and a small skull-like face sits in a beaded oval frame, with a smaller pony-like figure below it. Bats are scattered around the purple background, and the bold black outlines are filled with flat, saturated colour and soft shading. The tattoo is shown on the forearm, with a partial black-ink tattoo visible at the top edge of the frame.

The bats came first, which Dolly Fenwick said was no surprise. Every night since the travelling fair shut its gates outside Kendal, the bats circled the caravan where the pony stood, and every morning someone found another stitch undone along her flank. Dolly had sewn her together herself, from two feed sacks and a teal dye meant for the bunting, and she had given her a mane from the spare ribbons of the ring-toss stall. Nobody had expected her to wake.

Mr Okonedo, who ran the coconut shy, said it was the damp. Mrs Pryce said it was the moon, and the moon was certainly very fat that week, sitting over the marquee like a pearl button. Dolly said nothing. She had seen the way the pony's painted eye followed her across the mud, and the little skull stitched on her chest had turned, that morning, to face the gate.
On the last night before the fair packed up for winter, Dolly led her out past the closed rides, and the bats went up in a purple flurry against the dark. The pony stepped onto the wet road, her mane lifting in the wind. Dolly held the rope loosely. Nobody had ever told her a stitched pony could go wherever she liked.
At the crossroads the pony stopped, nosed at her own tail of ribbon, and set off towards the hill where the frost lay white, trailing bats like bunting behind her. Dolly stood in the lane until the lanterns of the fair went out one by one. Then she walked back to the caravan for her needle, because the ring-toss ribbons were nearly gone and there was a great deal of thread still to be found.
