Zombie pony with skull and gravestone on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A green zombie pony with a pink mane and a skull on its head walks beside a cupcake, with stitches and red blood spots on its body. Bats, a yellow crescent moon and smoky clouds fill the background, and a grey gravestone sits at the lower right. Bold black outlines, bright flat colour and soft grey shading frame the design across the outer thigh.

Old Mrs Tandy kept a garden behind the chapel wall, and in it she kept a pony that had been dead for thirty years. Nobody in Thornwick thought this strange, because the pony had never been alive in the first place. It was a painted toy, green as a bean leaf, with a mane the colour of rhubarb and a skull button sewn on its forehead by a girl who had run out of ideas and not out of thread.

The girl was Edie Marsh, and she had buried the pony under the lilac the autumn her brother went to sea. She told the vicar it was so the pony could keep watch over the moon. The moon that year was yellow and low over the orchard, and every night the bats came out of the church tower to see whether the pony had stood up yet. It had not. But Edie checked anyway, with a cupcake in her apron pocket, because her brother had said the dead like sweet things and she wanted to be polite.
Thirty winters passed. The stitches came loose and were mended with red wool, and the paint spots on its flank faded to the colour of old jam. Mrs Tandy, who had been Edie long ago, dug up the pony one March morning, brushed the soil from its cheek, and found that somebody had already set a small stone at its head, carved with a single word: home.
She sat down on the cold grass with the pony in her lap. Far off, a ship's bell rang once. After a while she reached into her own apron pocket, where a cupcake had been waiting all those years, and set it beside the pony in the sun.
