The band at the Majestic had reached the third number of the second set when Frances Dunn pressed a folded cigarette packet into my palm and told me to read it later. I was twenty-two, a dreadful dancer, and I had only asked her for a foxtrot because Stanley had bet me a shilling I wouldn't. On the packet, in pencil, someone had written 221B and gone over the numerals twice.

I took it home to the boarding house on Cavendish Road and sat on the bottom stair until Mrs Pike switched off the hall light. Nobody on our street had a B to their number. We had plain figures and nothing more, a row of front doors all painted the same tired green. The next morning I walked the length of the road with the packet in my coat pocket, counting, and came out at a corner shop with a bow window and a spaniel asleep across the step.

The stairs beside the shop smelled of camphor and hot irons. At the top a door stood open on a room full of hanging coats, and Frances was perched on a sewing box with her shoes off, laughing at my face. "You thought it was a clue," she said. "It's only where I go when the Palais floor gets too crowded to think." On the gramophone in the corner the same foxtrot was starting up, and when she held out her hand I took it, and this time I kept my eyes on her feet.
