Om symbol on inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single Om symbol is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown in a close view of the hand with the palm turned upwards. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The ink is the only colour apart from the red nail polish and a silver ring on one finger, set against warm, softly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming sideways across the market since seven, and Tomas had given up pretending the tarpaulin kept anything dry. He sat on an upturned crate with a brass bowl in his lap, rubbing its rim with a leather-wrapped stick, waiting for the sound to come up through the metal the way it always did when the weather was right. Along the row, the fishmonger was shouting prices to nobody, and the man selling phone cases had his radio turned up loud enough to rattle the awning.

The bowl had belonged to a woman called Ines who ran the flower stall before her hip gave out. She had left it to him with a note that said only, 'Don't sell it to someone who wants it for the mantelpiece.' He had kept it three winters. Nobody had asked for it properly until a girl in a yellow raincoat stopped, crouched, and held her palm flat above the rim without touching it, as if waiting for weather to pass through.

Tomas struck the bowl once. The note opened slowly and went on longer than the bowl had any right to, rising through the drip and the radio and the fishmonger's cries until the whole row seemed to pause beneath it. The girl closed her eyes. Water ran off the awning in a thin line and the note bent around it.

When the sound faded she asked the price. He named a number he had made up on the spot, too low, and she shook her head and paid the higher one he should have asked. Then she walked off into the rain, and he sat with the cold bowl and understood that Ines had been right about the mantelpiece, and that he would not be selling it after all.
