Mother Ruth Penhallow kept the post for the seven villages above Tregarth, and when the February floods took the bridge at Pennick, the letters for the far side had to go round by the high road. Nobody had ever walked it in a day. Dan Cotter, the miller's youngest, said he would, and nobody laughed because his boots were already laced and the satchel was already on his back.

He set out before six with a flask of cold tea and a pair of boots his uncle had resoled twice. The road ran past the quarry, through the moor gate where the sheep dogs watched him go by without barking, and down into the valley of Rhos. At every milestone he scratched a tally with a nail, and by the twentieth his toes had stopped reporting to him and the rain came sideways off the tors.

At the chapel at Gwyn Brook an old woman in a black shawl stopped him at the gate and pressed a green enamel oval into his palm. Her husband had worn it on his coat when he walked to the coast and back for a bet. "Twenty-six and two," she said, "and not a yard over, or the road keeps the rest." Dan did not understand her, but he pinned it to his collar and ran the last stretch downhill with the bag bumping against his hip.

He reached the far side as the lamps were being lit. The widow at the last cottage read her letter twice on the step, then looked past him up the hill. When Dan turned, the road was already white with snow, and the oval on his collar was warm as a coin left in a pocket.
