Two small stars behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and ear, with a hand gathering blonde hair into a ponytail. Two small outlined stars sit on the skin just behind the ear, drawn in thin, dark black linework with no shading. The tattoos are the only colour accent against the skin tone and the grey clothing at the neckline.

The two stars came up over the Tarrin flats at the same hour every night, and the carter's daughter, Hesta, had been told they were sisters who quarrelled over a well and were set in the sky to watch each other forever. Her mother said that was nonsense. Her grandfather said it was true, and that the road was the only thing keeping them apart. Nobody on the Kessen road agreed on much after dark.

The road ran sixty miles of white gravel from the salt pans to the water at Oru. In the dry year a man named Pell Anand tried to cross it on foot with a goat and no water. He got as far as the cairn where the stars seemed to hang low, lay down there, and decided the sisters had taken his last breath as their price. Hesta found him at dawn, because she had gone looking for the goat, which had bolted toward the pans.
She gave him the last of her water and walked him back along the ruts, keeping the lower star at her left shoulder as her grandfather had taught her. Pell asked why a girl was out alone on the flats. She said the stars showed her where the road bent. He laughed until he coughed, because the stars had never bent anywhere in their lives.
At Oru the well keeper counted the goat, the girl and the man, and told them the road needed no stars at all, only someone who kept walking. That night Hesta looked up and saw the two lights still side by side, too far apart to touch and too close to lose. She decided to tell her grandfather the sisters had finally been let off.
