Vertical script line on upper back with gold leaf

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a thin vertical line of dark script lettering running down the upper back beside the shoulder blade. A small flake of gold leaf sits above the script, and the skin has a glossy sheen from the light. The linework is fine and even in black ink, with a dark top and curly brown hair framing the top of the shot.

The gold leaf had come in a book of tissue, and Ines Varga counted the sheets twice before the ship cleared the Azores. Forty leaves, each thinner than breath. The captain wanted the figurehead regilded before Lisbon, and the gilder had died of fever in Recife, so the job fell to the ship's clerk, who had the steadiest hand aboard and nothing better to do with it.

She worked on the lower deck by lantern light, laying the leaf with a squirrel-hair brush and a dab of gum while the swell lifted and dropped the casks around her. Each evening she copied the day's log into the ledger in a narrow column of script: the wind, the latitude, the names of the dead. Her mother had taught her that a column of letters, read top to bottom, could hold a whole country. Ines never quite believed it until the night she wrote the name of the boy from Porto, the lantern guttered, and a flake of gold lifted off the brush and drifted onto the page beside his name.

Tomas the carpenter found her there, and instead of scolding he sat down and watched the flake settle. 'That's bad luck,' he said. 'Or good.' She told him she didn't know which, and he said it was the most honest answer he'd had from a clerk in twenty years.

At Lisbon they stripped the figurehead and found the old gilding beneath, dull and blistered. Ines sealed the ledger and carried it ashore under her arm, one bright speck still clinging to the line where the boy's name had been written.
