3D purple butterfly on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A purple butterfly with black-edged wings and white dots sits on the skin, with its wings spread slightly outward. Soft violet shading fills the wings, and a grey drop shadow beneath the body and right wing gives the butterfly a lifted, three-dimensional look. The tattoo is centred in the frame against a plain skin background, with dark clothing at the right edge.

The lift in Wexcombe House had been broken since March, so every evening I climbed fourteen flights with the shopping knocking against my knees and the radio turned low on the landing. Dessie from flat nine was the one who started it. He had a tin of violet emulsion he'd borrowed from the caretaker's cupboard, and one Sunday he drew a butterfly on the concrete wall by the stairwell window, its wings spread wide as if it had just landed there. He filled the wings in soft purple, picked out the black edges with a dry brush, and dotted them with the white of a school correction pen. Then, with a grey pencil and a lot of squinting, he gave it a shadow falling down and to the right, so it looked like it might lift off the render if you blinked.

The council sent two men with grey paint the following Thursday. Mrs Abara from flat six stood in her dressing gown and told them it was the only nice thing anyone had done on this floor in eleven years, and they said they had a work order, and she said so did she, and in the end they painted round it, which was somehow worse. Dessie came out with a bag of sandwiches and sat on the bottom step, and he said the butterfly was only half the job. You couldn't paint over the shadow, he said, because the shadow was where the light had come from, and the light was still coming in through that window every evening at six.
The lift was mended in October. I rode it up on a Tuesday with nothing in my hands at all, and when the doors opened on fourteen I stepped out and stopped. The paint had been scrubbed off the wings in a pale patch, but the grey shadow was still there, sharp as ever, falling across the wall and the handrail where nobody had bothered to touch it. I walked round it the way you walk round a sleeping dog, and I have done every evening since.
