Abstract black and red lattice on a hand
Geometric · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of a tattoo on the back of a hand, showing overlapping, sweeping black lines that form a lattice and a large angular outline. Red lines run through the lattice and across the design, with soft grey shading along the black strokes. The design fills the centre of the frame and extends toward the wrist and the edge of the hand.

Mags had been told not to climb the north tower, so at half past six she was already halfway up it, the stone steps wet under her boots and the wind coming through the arrow slits like someone impatient to be let in. Below her the survey team had pegged out the courtyard with orange string. Nobody had told her what the string was for, and she had stopped asking.

At the top, the window frame lay where it had fallen two winters back, a lattice of mullions and transoms that had once held the glass of a chapel nobody remembered. Its shadow still lay on the flagstones, cut into diamonds. Mags had a biro in one hand and a tin of red ochre in the other, and she traced the old lines onto the stone the way her grandfather had traced cracks in plaster: black where the bones were sound, red where they were gone and only the memory of them was left.
The surveyor, a thin man called Pryce who never took his gloves off, came up behind her and stood looking over her shoulder. "You're drawing the wrong thing," he said. "The frame is the building. The gaps are just weather."
She did not answer him. She dipped her finger in the ochre and drew one more line across the diamonds, from the broken sill to the edge of the drop, where the red ran off the stone into nothing. Far below, a gull lifted off the string. When Pryce finally went down, she stayed where she was and watched the light move across the lattice until the red and the black were the same colour, and the window was only a pattern again.
