Red and blue geometric lines on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers the forearm in an angular, faceted pattern of thin interlocking lines, forming triangles and irregular polygons that narrow toward the wrist. Two colours are used, red and blue, with the lines crossing and overlapping to create a layered, wireframe-like effect. The photograph is taken outdoors against white cladding, with the sleeve of a grey sweater pushed up to show the full design.

Hedda had tied the red thread to her wrist at dawn, the way her grandmother had tied it to every child in the valley, and by noon the mist on the Sarn Pass had swallowed everything but the thread and the stones at her feet. Her brother Tam had gone up after a blue fox the afternoon before. He was nine and believed foxes could be followed to the end of anything.

The old people said the pass was a net. Long ago a woman had strung red and blue lines across the mountain so the wind would get tangled and stop blowing down into the villages, and every ridge and gully was a knot in that work. Walk the knots in the right order and you came through. Walk them wrong and you came out on the wrong side of the hill, a year older and no closer to home.
She found Tam's footprints where the scree gave way to a slab of grey rock. Lines had been scratched into the stone there, a web of them, some stained with red ochre and some with blue smoke, crossing and crossing again. Where two lines met, the path split in four directions, and every one of them looked like the way down. She stood with the red thread slack in her fingers and understood that she could not tell which line was true by looking at it.
So she stopped looking. She closed her eyes, felt for the place where the wind pulled hardest against her face, and stepped into the crossing where both colours ran through the same point. The mist thinned. Below her, the valley lay open like a palm full of threads, and at the bottom of it a small boy was sitting on a flat stone, tracing the lines in the dust with a stick and waiting for her to come down and show him the way.
