Black fine line tattoo of nested, interlocking triangles forming a star shape on the inner wrist and forearm.

Nested triangle star on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm and hand showing a geometric tattoo of interlocking triangles arranged into a symmetrical star-like figure. The lines are thin, uniform black strokes with no shading, and the triangles shrink towards a small central cluster. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against a dark background, with the skin lit evenly.

The slate in the wheelhouse of the Marguerite had been wiped so many times the chalk had sunk into the grain, but Ada could still make out the star if she stood where the lamp caught it at an angle. Her father called it the Reckoning. Three triangles nested inside three more, shrinking until they became a single point no bigger than a rivet.

Nobody in Skerry Row knew where old Tam Corrie had first learned it. He said a Dutchman had drawn it on the back of a bill of lading in 1911, and that any boat which followed the lines came home with its hold full. Ada thought it was nonsense until the autumn the sounder died and the fog came down over the Minch like wet wool.

They lay to with the engine ticking. Her father sat at the slate with a rag and a stub of chalk and traced the outer point first, then the next, following the star inward the way you would feel for stairs in the dark. At the centre he stopped and pointed, not at the sea, but at the tin hurricane lamp bolted above the chart table. Its flame was the smallest triangle.

They ran toward it for an hour, feeling the swell change under the hull, until the fog tore open and the harbour wall stood right there, grey and patient. In the morning the hold was silver with herring. The slate was clean again, except for one line Ada had never seen before, running out from the point like a pulled thread. She left it where it was. Some charts are only useful once someone has come home by them.
