Abstract surreal forearm tattoo

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm with abstract, biomorphic shapes, dots, stars and concentric circles drawn in bold black linework. Several areas are filled with red, teal, yellow and orange, and the colour sits against plain black fills and open skin. The design wraps the forearm in a dense, balanced composition against a black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every night the carter Abel Ruiz pulled his mule off the road at the third milestone, because that was where the stars came down to drink. His mother had told him so, and her mother before her. You did not have to believe it. You only had to keep the mule quiet and the lamp shut.

The night he forgot to shut the lamp, a small grey woman stood in the road holding a bucket made of spun wire. Black dots sat on her fingers, and when she lifted her hands they rolled off and settled on the sand like seeds. "You are late," she said. "Everyone else has filled their cups."

Abel had no cup, only a dented tin flask, and he offered it. She laughed, and the laugh went out over the dunes as a ring of sound that came back as a wheel turning. She poured the water into her bucket, and it became a round blue pool with the moon standing in it. "Pay me in what you can carry," she said, and gave him a stone with a red stripe through it, warm as bread.

He walked the rest of the road with the stone in his fist. At each milestone after that the stars sat lower, and when he reached town the church clock had no hands, only a circle of spots, and the baker said it had always been so. In the morning the stone had gone soft in his pocket and was rolling about like a seed, and when he set it down on the table a small black star opened its eye and blinked.
