Acoustic guitar with flowing music staff
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil-style drawing of an acoustic guitar with a curling ribbon of musical staff lines and notes wrapping up the neck and ending in a flourish at the headstock. The body and sound hole are shaded in soft greys with fine, controlled linework on the strings, tuning pegs and notes. The guitar is centred on a plain white background with no body part visible.

The lift at Wharf Lane made the same noise every night at ten past three, a long sigh before the doors opened, and Ruth Dacre had stopped jumping at it years ago. What she had not got used to was the guitar. It came up from the basement store, where nobody kept anything but mops and broken beds, a few bars of something slow, then a stop, as if whoever held it was waiting for permission.

On the fourth night she went down with a torch. The store smelled of bleach and old cardboard. Leaning against the shelving was an acoustic guitar with a grey pencilled top, and its strings were not quite strings. They were lines of music, five to each stave, with the notes sitting on them like birds on a wire. When she touched the neck, the ribbon of staves lifted off the wood and curled up past her shoulder, unhurried, and she heard a tune she half knew from her mother's kitchen radio.
Ward C had eleven beds and one boy who would not sleep. Ruth carried the guitar up in the lift, the staff lines trailing after her like ribbon behind a kite. She set it on the chair by his bed. He reached for it with both hands and played three chords badly, then better, and the notes came off the page and drifted round the room, over the drip stands and under the blinds, until the whole ward was breathing in time.
By six the sky was grey over the car park. Ruth went down again and found the store empty, the shelves bare, only a faint curl of pencil on the lino where the music had stood. The boy was asleep. On his locker lay a scrap of paper in careful capitals: KEEP THE LAST NOTE FOR THE MORNING SHIFT.
