Calligraphic treble clef design
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised treble clef drawn with bold, tapered calligraphic strokes in solid black on a white background. The loops at the top and sides are open and flowing, and the lower spiral curls into a tail, giving the design a sense of movement. The composition is centred and isolated, with no shading or secondary colour.

The stem had wound up the drainpipe in a loop, then a second loop, then a long, slack tail that hung past the sill and swayed whenever the back door opened.

Marguerite from number nine watched me from her kitchen window with her arms folded. For thirty years she had listened to him through the party wall, practising the same cello passage until it stopped sounding like a mistake. "Leave the bottom bit," she called through the glass. "He'd have wanted the bottom bit left." I hadn't noticed until she said it that the vine had settled into a shape, a tall looping stem over a figure-eight of leaves, with the tail curling round and down into a spiral at the end.
I cut the rotten wood out and left every curl that was holding. Then I took a cutting from the tail, the way he'd shown me years ago, and pushed it into a jam jar of water on the windowsill beside her sink.
By the next spring it had put out three pale roots. Marguerite came out with her tea to watch me pot it, and she hummed the low note she'd heard every evening through the wall, a little flat, and the tendrils on the drainpipe moved in the wind as if something on the other side of the glass had started keeping time.
