Guitar with florals and a treble clef

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A stylised guitar fills the frame, with a pair of musical notes at the neck, parallel lines for the strings and a solid circular sound hole. Flowing vines, curled tendrils and simple flower shapes wrap around the body and a treble clef sits on the lower half. The design uses bold solid black shapes and clean curves on a plain white background.

She climbed the stairs one wet Tuesday to strip the bed and found the instrument had changed. A length of bindweed from the back wall had crept in under the door, threaded itself through the sound hole and knotted round the neck, its curled tips open as if listening. Under the bed lay a folded page from the pier concert programme with a line in pencil: Keep the tune warm, Morag. I'll be back for the last reel.

She did not know a chord from a kettle, but she took to sitting by the window after the teas were cleared, picking at the top string with a thimble while the gulls worked the bay. Danny from the chip shop came up one evening with the vinegar, stopped on the landing and said the notes sounded like somebody's grandmother trying to remember a hymn. She told him to mind his own business and went on plucking, and the bindweed grew another inch along the bridge.

By September the tendrils had reached the two little notes at the head and wrapped them like a pair of hands. When the autumn gales came in off the water, the open case rattled and the guitar gave out a low, wandering sound nobody had ever paid for. Mrs Hebden left the window shut for once, and kept the room warm.
